Mengqiao’s research focuses on proteins associated with mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA). These factors interact with mtDNA either stably or transiently and are essential for processes such as mtDNA expression, maintenance, distribution, and inheritance. Using biotin ligase–based proximity labeling, he aims to map the mtDNA interactome with high efficiency and sensitivity. In parallel, he is characterising Rrg9, a previously uncharacterised protein identified through this approach, to define its role in mtDNA regulation and mitochondrial function.
